About me

My journey began when I studied molecular biology at university with the intention to become a discovery scientist. I did indeed make a discovery, but in the library not the lab, when I realised it was writing about science – instead of ‘doing’ science – that I loved.

I worked in academic publishing and PR before becoming the first ever science communicator at The British Heart Foundation.

Freelance since 2013, I feel privileged to have built an impressive portfolio of lovely clients who keep coming back to me for help in telling engaging stories about great work. A lot of my clients are in the STEM sector, but I love writing on a range of topics – especially for charities.

My grounding in bioscience, including a year’s placement in an MRC lab, means I have the fundamental knowledge to ask scientists the right questions and write simply but with all-important accuracy. And my in-house charity experience means I understand the challenges and needs of my clients.

When I’m not writing, you’ll find me enjoying the beautiful countryside around me in the Cotswolds, fighting a losing battle with bindweed at my allotment, or being bankrupted in Bristol’s clothes shops by my daughter.

Jane has delivered a series of projects for my team at the ICR, working on a broad range of communications for a variety of external and internal audiences including publications, an email newsletter and a complex video project. Jane combines very strong skills in copywriting and science and corporate communications with strategic nous and the ability to work proactively and productively with senior stakeholders including top-level scientists, and delivers sticky and complex projects efficiently, creatively, and to a very high standard. She’s also just generally a pleasure to work with.
